Geology Museum
The Geological Museum in the existing S.H. Knight Geology Building was renovated in 2013 by Malone Belton Abel working in concert with the country’s leading natural history exhibit designer, Chase Studio. We met the University’s goal of showcasing its excellent collection in a high-quality facility, with exhibits that present solid information in a compelling and educational display.
The 6700 SF space, in use since 1956, was renovated to abate hazardous materials; upgrade the mechanical, electrical, audio/visual, lighting, and fire protection systems; refurbish the work studio including providing a way for visitors to see the scientists cleaning specimens; and improve circulation routes in the museum both with a new stairway to the mezzanine and a clarification of the entry.
Terry Chase led the redesign of 35 exhibits, and designed and installed new exhibits. Additional exhibit installation is awaiting funding. “Informal science learning” was enhanced by reorganizing the exhibits according to geological time, and adding hands-on exhibits for children.
